What is you "WHY"

Joun 9:8-41

Romans 2:1-4

Bumper sticker: 'Christians are not perfect, just forgiven.' Born-again believers in Christ understand this. But most non-Christians don't get it. Oh, they understand the concept. But they often think this saying is an excuse that gives Christians permission to live like anyone else while still believing that they are going to Heaven. It’s not that un-believers think Christians should be perfect or that Christians cannot do sinful things. The problem for them is over 2 issues taught in the Bible that confuse even believers: God's grace & human depravity How can something as wonderful as forgiveness of sins and eternal salvation be free? How can a person claim to be a Christian and act like that? For the unbeliever the things of God are impossible to understand. 1Cor 2:14 ...the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. Even Christians ask questions about these things. We understand them experientially. But we still wonder about even our own selves...how we can still sin when we have so much from the Lord. Things that are valuable are costly. It is inconceivable that something as priceless as heaven could be offered as a free gift especially when earthly knowledge says that holiness enough to get to heaven must be worked for and earned. It's almost impossible for a non-believer to understand how an individual who claims he / she belongs to God still struggles with imperfection. Christians explain our relationship with God using phrases like 'Jesus has come into my heart.' Since people generally understand that Jesus was perfect, it doesn’t equate that the person in whom Jesus resides, & allegedly through whom Jesus lives, is not acting in a perfect manner. No wonder people are confused. We as Christians have some understanding of the process of sanctification. We know that asking Jesus into our hearts does not automatically make us perfect & erase our sinful humanity. If that was true the Bible would not be filled with counsel on forgiving others, understanding each other's failures, that believers should repent and ask forgiveness when they sin, etc. So when an unbeliever expects perfection from a Christian - although unrealistic - at least I understand why they think that. But when a Christian - a brother or sister in Jesus - expects perfection from other believers, that is most troubling. It also tells us that the brother/sister is not well versed in Scripture. Our standard is high because our example is Jesus, Who was perfect. Our motives are often good. But we fall short. So that bumper sticker is a good reminder to believers. Jesus never put pressure on us to be perfect. He simply told us that we should follow Him. Please do not misunderstand. That we are not going to reach a state of perfection this side of heaven is not an excuse to behave in a fleshly & sinful manner. Ruth Graham once said something very wise about her husband, Billy Graham: "It's my job to love Billy. It's God's job to make him good." Replace the name 'Billy' with the name of people you know - your spouse, your parents, friends, bosses, neighbors, especially your pastor - and you will see that your prayer list has grown exponentially. The flip side is this: someone feels the same about you. Their job is to love you. It’s God’s job to make you good. You know better than any other human being the sin inside of you. That should foster humility, not pride or hypocrisy. So be sure to put yourself on your own prayer list.

Romans 1:24-32

In our study last week we looked at Deut 6:4 - the shema of Israel. We looked at the Hebrew word translated "one" which was inspired by God the HS. one = echad = a compound unity. One in unity comprised of several parts. This is in contrast with the Heb word yachid which means strict numerical oneness. The Holy Spirit also inspired Moses to use the word Elohim which we translate as “God.” Elohim is a plural word which speaks of a singular reality - God. In this we again see hints within the language to the plurality of the godhead. Elohim refers to the one true God but it can also speak of the many false gods of the nations. It is interchangeable. Elohim is a plural word which can be translated either as "your God" (singular) or "your gods" (plural). It's the same word. Some might think God could have done better in His word choices so as not to confuse us as we study. However, when we look at the entirety of scripture we see the wisdom in His choice of the word Elohim. If you turn away from Elohim - the one true God - you will end up serving the elohim, the gods (lowercase g). When the people of Israel turned away from God, they always ended up turning to the gods of the nations. They turned from one Elohim to another elohim. Because in the end it all comes down to a choice between Elohim (upper case E) or elohim (lower case e). The elohim - lowercase 'g' gods - are just like the gods Israel turned to at the foot of Mt. Sinai. They turned to a golden calf. But false gods (lowercase g) wear many different faces. The gods of money & pleasure. The elohim of success, possessions, comfort, vanity & self. There is no end to them. As it is for the individual, so it is for people groups, nations & civilizations. Any nation which turns away from Elohim God in heaven will end up serving the false elohim of the world. Earthly elohim ultimately lose their luster. They become divided & scattered. Those who worship these other elohim end up devaluing, degrading and debasing themselves just like the people of Israel who danced naked around the golden calf. What should we do if we find earthly elohim our present in our lives? The same thing the nation of Israel did with the golden calf - get rid of them. Then turn back to the one true and living Elohim.

What I Learned From A Conversation With An Apple Tree

Do you struggle with what Paul calls "the works of the flesh"? How does the fruit of the spirit grow up in your life? In this sermon, preached at Tulsa International Fellowship (a ministry of First Presbyterian Church) I discuss both the works of the flesh and the fruit of the spirit...along with sharing a conversation I once had with an apple tree...about growing fruit.
