In moments of desperation, it’s common for our thoughts to spiral into negativity and fear. I’ve faced many such moments—concerns over my children, misunderstandings with my husband, and the overwhelming demands of daily challenges. It’s too easy to let these worries consume us.

How to Seek the Lord When You’re Feeling Desperate

One of my most challenging seasons taught me a valuable lesson about refocusing my thoughts on God’s truth.

Initially, Philippians 4:6-7 seemed to offer only temporary relief from anxiety. It wasn’t until I was deeply engaged with the Bible that I understood the necessity of replacing my worries with the Word of God. During one particularly tough time, I memorized Matthew 6:33 out of great need: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” This verse became a lifeline, reminding me to prioritize God’s will and trust in His provision.

Recently, while speaking at a homeschool conference, a young mother asked me how I managed to recall so many scripture verses. I explained that my recall was born out of significant needs. As I’ve navigated life’s trials—from writing books, homeschooling my children, adopting, and maintaining healthy habits with weight and activity—scripture has been my constant guide and comfort. During those moments of great need, what I needed from God in the past remains what I need from Him today and what I will continue to need in the future.

Here are a few other scriptures that keep me grounded:

– Psalm 139:1-2

“You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.” This verse reassures me that God intimately knows and loves me, understanding my innermost thoughts.

– Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” It reminds me to rely not on my own judgment but on God’s direction and wisdom.

– Matthew 6:33

As previously mentioned, this verse emphasizes the importance of seeking God’s kingdom above all else, ensuring His blessings and guidance. These verses are not merely comforting words. They are supported by the Holy Spirit’s power—the same power that raised Jesus from the dead.

How to Seek the Lord When You’re Feeling Desperate

In times of desperation, remember that you are never alone.

God’s word is not only a lamp to guide us through the darkest valleys but also a promise of His continual presence and support. His truth can transform our desperation into deep, enduring trust. As you navigate life’s challenges, let this assurance uphold and invigorate you: what you need from God today and will sustain you in the future is His unchanging love and guidance. This heartwarming truth is constant throughout every season, guiding us to endure and thrive under His care.
