God’s Not Finished With You Yet

“Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 (NASB1995)

If you were asked to take a photo of something that reflected your life today and what you’re feeling, what would that picture be?

Recently, our church staff went away for an overnight retreat — a time to slow down and reflect on life. Right before free time, we were asked to go outside and take a photo of something that reflects where we are in life.

At first, I was hesitant about the assignment. I’m not creative, and I don’t have an eye for photography. But I walked around looking for something that would encapsulate my life in this season.

And there it was! A lamppost. It looked a little weather-worn; the glass was dusty and slightly cracked. But it was still working and would provide light for our path that night.

As we came back together, we shared the pictures we had taken and explained what they meant to us. That lamppost was a snapshot of what I want to be true of my life as I age and go through different seasons. I long to carry out my God-given purpose until the day He takes me home. I know I can’t do what I did in my 20s and 30s, but I still have purpose — pointing others to Jesus Christ.

Yes, my body may be a little more wrinkled and worn, and I may not be as spry as I once was, but my light can still shine, just like the weathered lamppost.

Regardless of what season of life you’re in today — whether you’re a busy mom; an overworked employee; an empty nester; a caregiver for a loved one; a retiree not sure what to do with your life now; a single person because of calling, divorce, or death of a spouse; a patient fighting a deadly diagnosis or health challenge; or a seasoned saint nearing the end of your earthly journey — you still have purpose, and your life matters.

My mom lived to be almost 99 years old and finished her life in a nursing home. She couldn’t speak, see, hear, or walk, but she could smile. And God used her smile to point those around her to Christ until she took her last breath.

As Jesus said in Matthew 5:14-16, “You are the light of the world … Let your light shine … and glorify your Father who is in heaven” (NASB1995).

As long as we’re still breathing, we have purpose. God’s not finished with us yet.

Heavenly Father, help me embrace Your presence in the seasons when I’m tired and feel like I have nothing left to offer. Remind me that You can still use me even when I feel useless. Help me fulfill Your purpose for me until I take my last breath. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
