It’s our job to be Jesus to our lost friends. To encourage those who know God but continue to struggle with sin. We need to remain faithful to the standards God gives us for living in the Bible. We must also ask God to help show us how to love well. When sin exists, wisdom is necessary in each and every situation.

How can we, as believers who espouse Biblical tenants, exude Christ to all people, including those in the LGBTQ+ community? Let me suggest three right ways and three wrong ways.

Though Scripture is clear that homosexuality is sinful, what is not so clear is why. The reasons why God is against homosexuality are not so defined, and require some additional digging. Let’s take a look at 5 potential reasons God is against homosexuality:

I’m officially declaring that I’m a chicken. I’m not willing to cast stones. But I’m not willing to move boundaries either.

There is not a single place in God’s word where scripture is ambiguous or silent regarding the sanctity and fidelity of God’s purpose for marriage. It is inconceivable that two people of the same sex, attempting to live in union with one another, could faithfully model and image Christ’s love for his bride. And this is the highest purpose of God’s design for marriage.

Those who decry the sexual revolution, but approve or excuse adultery, sexual abuse, or pornography—should have, no credibility. Instead, what is needed is an ongoing demonstration of counter-cultural fidelity, accountability, love, and a recognition of the limits that make life good and livable.

Perhaps the United Methodist Church can learn from its Methodist cousin…before the “traditionalists” have to separate and start their own denomination.

It is a sobering time for the UMC, which has tried to stay unified while wrestling with the issue of human sexuality for decades.

Not taking a side on this issue is to take a side. To decide it is a matter of indifference is to risk having Jesus against you
